FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—An anticyclone lies to the northeast of the North Island; a cold front is moving eastwards over the South Island. Forecast:

Kaikoura Coast and Canterbury.—Moderate to fresh south-westerlies predominating; variable skies and scattered showers; cool.

Central Marlborough and the Sounds.—Strong but decreasing north-westerlies probably turning to moderate south-westerlies later; cloudy skies; scattered rain; moderate Nelson.—Moderate south-westerlies gradually prevailing; some rain at first but partly cloudy later; moderate temperatures.

Buller and Westland.—Moderate south-wester-lies; variable skies with a few scattered showers; cool.
