Air Race Entries
The owners of eight light aircraft have indicated that they will enter the vintage aircraft race which will be held at the Royal New Zealand Air Force base at Wigram next month as part of the celebrations to mark 50 years of flying in Christchurch. Four more may enter the race.
Rimu Inquiry Captain C. M. Anderson, a retired master mariner, of Christchurch, and Mr A. Wall, a retired Auckland engineer and surveyor of ships, have been appointed assessors at the official inquiry into the sinking of the crayfishing boat Rimu while she was on her way to the Chatham Islands on August 4. The inquiry will begin in the No. 5 Magistrate’s Court before Mr K. H. J. Headifen, S.M., on October 30, and is expected to last three or four days. Cloudy And Mild In spite of an overcast sky and variable winds, the temperature in Christchurch yesterday rose steadily to a maximum of 70 degrees recorded at the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m. By 2 p.m. a light north-east wind which had blown during the morning had changed to a light northerly. Later the wind changed to a strong northwesterly, and gusts of 46 knots were recorded at Harewood. At Harewood at 6 a.m. the temperature was 48 degrees. It had risen to 56 degrees by 9 a.m. and to 63 degrees by noon. The maximum temperature at Harewood was 64 degrees, recorded at 1 p.m. The Government Life building gauge registered 65 degrees at 4.30 p.m. Welfare Centre The Seventh-day Adventist health and welfare centre and health clinic in Bealey Avenue will be opened on Tuesday at 11 a.m. by Pastor V. W. Schoen, of Washington, world leader of the church’s lay activities. Pastor W. J. Richards, Australian and New Zealand leader of the church, will be present. The centre will have a kitchen and a lecture theatre for about 50. Trained persons will give demonstrations on healthful cooking as well as conduct classes in first aid, home nursing, and health and hygiene.
Appeal For Members
Grants by the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation had exceeded income, and more members were needed, said the chairman (Dr L. C. L. Averill) at a meeting of the foundation’s council. Any member of the public, he said, was cordially invited to attend the foundation’s annual meeting on October 18, at which an address on research would be given by the associate director of the medical unit at Princess Margaret Hospital (Dr E. Espiner).
