The world drivers’ championship will be decided at the Mexican Grand Prix on October 22. It has been calculated that if Jack Brabham wins the race, and Denis Hulme finishes no higher than fifth, Brabham will win the title. But if Hulme finishes fourth or better he will win the championship and become New Zealand’s first world champion driver no matter where Brabham finishes. « * *
The Fiat Car Club’s first invitation rally, a 200-mile event, will be held on Sunday. The field will be limited to 60 cars, and the start is at 9.30 am. from the Bishopdale car park. The first car is expected to finish at the Southbrook Hall at 4.30 p.m. A trophy will be presented to the winner.
A racing circuit on a disused airfield at Thruxton, about 70 miles from London, will be used by the British Automobile Racing Club to replace the Goodwood circuit, which is no longer available for racing. There has been a motorcycle circuit on the airfield for some time, and it has a length of more than 2.2 miles. # ♦ ♦
A B.M.C. 1800 recently set seven new international speed records during a seven-day endurance run at the Monza racing circuit in Italy. The records, for production cars between 1500 and 2000 c.c., included an average speed of 92.8 miles an hour for the seven days. The car travelled more than 15,000 miles during the run. It was standard except for a modified cylinder head.
