Adventure Camps

The Arthur’s Pass National Park Board has received 132 applications and many more inquiries for entry to the two four-day adventure camps in the park in January. As the number at each is limited to 16, a ballot will be held after entries close on November 1. Reporting to a meeting of the board, the chief ranger (Mr P. Croft) said interest in the camp had been intense. Many of the inquiries were from parents whose sons had no other opportunity of taking part in such an activity. “The board may be able to interest other organisations in developing this interest,” Mr Croft said.

The chairman (Mr M. J. Fitzgerald) said the camps were a pilot scheme this time, but there might be a greater number the next year. Mr J. C. Montgomery said it would be better if the camps were run by other organisations under the guidance of rangers. Mr Fitzgerald said it must be one of the great attractions of the camps, especially for parents, to know that they were being run by rangers, men experienced in their work.

The camps, for boys aged between 10 and 13, will be held in the Jordan River area of the park between January 2 and 11.
