Ardfern Sprints Brilliantly

The filly Ardfern sprinted three furlongs brilliantly in 34 4-ssec at Trentham yesterday, indicating that she is likely to he a strong rival for Yamaha in the Wellesley Stakes at the Wellington meeting tomorrow.
Clarendon ana summer Magic, prominent candidates for the Wellington Handicap came through their final trials satisfactorily without being seriously tested and Dunraven took the honours with the best half-mile of the morning. Ardfern, ridden by the stable apprentice, C. Carrick, was most impressive. She was travelling just as well at the finish of her task as at any other stage and without being kicked up. Mannix (Riordan) was under a hold throughout half a mile in 53sec, the last three furlongs in 38sec. Dunraven (Cullen) clocked 49 4-ssec for half a mile, the last three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. Clarendon (Willetts) strode over a mile in Imin 49 l-ssec, the last half keenly in 53 3-ssec.
He went off his feed after arriving at Trentham at the beginning of the week but he has now settled well and should be at his best for the Wellington Handicap. Yamaha (Blake), King’s Brew (Cullen) and Obliging (Grantham) ran half a mile down the chute with King’s Brew just shading Yamaha at the finish in 52 l-ssec . Summer Magic (Lowry) topped two rounds of pacework with half a mile in 55 2-ssec, the final three furlongs in 40 3-ssec. He has lightened with his race at Masterton. Game (Willetts) hit out boldly over half a mile in 50 l-ssec, the final three furlongs in 37sec. More Racing, Trotting News, Page 21
