Christchurch Film Festival Awards

“Billowing, Bellowing,” an abstract treatment of rhythmic patterns set to a musical sound track, won- the Hei Tiki Trophy, the premier award of the Christchurch Movie Club’s first international amateur film festival.

The film, 200 ft long In 16mm, was entered by Stuart Wynn-Jones, of London, and was among the 10 best at the “Amateur Cine World” contest in 1959. The festival attracted 35 entries, including films from England, the United States, Australia, and Czechoslovakia. The judges were Messrs F. Chilton, A. Stanbury, and J. M. Caffin. “Billowing, Bellowing” also won the genre section, and the special award for the best use of sound. Other section winners were.—Travel: “Stockholm Stopover,” Roy Charlton, Queensland. Humour: “Rx,” G. T. Caldwell, Christchurch. Nature: “Splendour in Nature," Miss K. Jarvis, Lower Hutt. Monochrome: “Margaret,” Frantisek Blizek, Czechoslovakia. Animation: “Victoria’s Rocking Horse,”

Grasshopper Group. London. “Rx” received the award for the best Bmm film made by a New Zealand competitor, “Paying the Price” was judged the best 16mm film by a New Zealand entrant.
