Parking

Sir,—When is the City Council going to do something about the parking near the museum and gardens? This morning we set out to visit the display of photographs in the McDougall Art Gallery and found parking quite hopeless, and a lot of “thoughtless" parking going on. too. It is very good of the City Council to provide these overseas displays for the people, but with all this “free” parking monopolised all day in Rolleston Avenue and vicinity, for at least a quarter of a mile from the main gate of the gardens, only the very active feel like walking on to visit the exhibition in the gallery.—Yours, etc., H. M. KING. October. 3, 1967. [The deputy traffic superintendent (Mr A. Laing) replies: “A 120-minute parking restriction was placed on the west side of Rolleston Avenue in this area to cater for visitors to the art gallery, museum, and Botanic Gardens. A lesser restriction would not assist such visitors. The council provides a substantial area for off-street parking situated off Riccarton Avenue. A pleasant walk through the gardens gives access to both the art gallery and the museum.”]
