Traffic Lights

Sir, —As a cyclist I have waited for up to three traffic light changes at intersections because a bicycle is apparently not heavy enough to alert the mechanism. In rainy weather it is unpleasant for cyclists to have to wait at these intersections until a car comes along. The ones I refer to are the Harper Avenue-Carlton Mill Road and the MontrealVictoria Streets lights. Could anything be done to remedy this?—Yours, etc., AVERIL LEES.

October 4, 196 7 . [The traffic superintendent of the Christchurch City Council (Mr J. F. Thomas) replies: “All traffic lights within the city are vehicleactuated and detection is adjusted to record the presence of cyclists. To ensure operational efficiency, a high and continuing standard of maintenance is carried out, but it is possible for faults to occur between inspections. The lights mentioned by the correspondent have been checked and are now operating correctly. We would appreciate motorists, cyclists, or pedestrians ringing the department when they suspect any faulty light operation, as this would allow us to have any faults remedied immediately and would save delay and confusion to others.”]
