CEMENT IN BULK
Site Available For Silo
He was satisfied that a site could be found for bulk cement facilities, the chief engineer (Mr A. J. Charman) reported to the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. At present all cement through the port was in bags and quantities were small as supply to the Christchurch area was mainly by road and rail, he said.
Wilsons (N.Z.) Portland Cement, Ltd, of Auckland, was interested in starting bulk deliveries. Considerations for bulk cement silo location were not so restrictive as for wheat silos, as cement could be pumped for distances, preferably not exceeding 600 feet This did not require facilities close to the wharf. More detailed information would be sought from the company before he reported on the siting and provision of the facilities, Mr Charman said. Captain Davis Promoted
Captain L. W. Davis was appointed deputy-harbourmaster by the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday and will take
up the appointment when the harbourmaster (Captain Champion) retires on October 21. Captain Davis was born in Gore in 1927 and was educated in Christchurch, first at Sumner and then at Cathedral Grammar School. Captain Davis commenced his sea career aboard the barque Pamir and served under Captain Champion. He also served with the tanker fleet of the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company and afterwards with the Union Steam Ship Company. In 1956, he resigned from the company while chief officer of the Karamu and joined the board as a junior pilot.
