Knitwear Prices In U.K. Store Cut
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Oct 10. Knitwear price cuts announced by the large British department store chain, Littlewood’s Stores, highlight the sharpening competition between wool and the synthetic fibres and within synthetic fibres, according to the “Financial Times.”
The cuts by Littlewood’s, effective from yesterday and ranging up to 8 per cent, follow closely on similar reductions announced last week by the Marks and Spencer chain.
The newspaper says the knitwear affected includes many items made from Du Font’s orlon and Courtauld’s courtelle acrylic fibres—“again, as with the Marks and Spencer move. “Retail price cuts have been expected since Du Pont and Courtauld’s about a month ago made sharp reductions in prizes of acrylics. And in many sections of the tex-
tile Industry a prolonged struggle is thought likely as world capacity for all the synthetics -* polysters like terylene and the various nylons, as well as acrylics—increases rapidly.” Littlewood’s cuts cover three ranges ' of sweater dresses in orlon which are reduced by 4s lid with savings of up to 8 per cent, while women’s* fullyfashioned courtelle shortsleeved jumpers are reduced from 25s lid and 27s lid to 255. Women’s fully-fashioned cardigans in courtelle are reduced by up to 2s 7d. There are also savings of up to 2s 6d on women’s botany wool fully-fashioned cardigans, and larger sizes of fully-fashioned lambswool jumpers are reduced from 44s lid to 42s 6d.
