'Clothes Much Better ’
New Zealand is apparently closing the “fashion gap.” Clothes have improved in style and quality since the visit of a young Californian, Miss Pamela Moore, in 1961.
Difficulties she had then in obtaining her small size have not occurred in the last 14 months she has been here. “Definitely better and much more up-to-date” is her summary of the country’s fashions.
Christchurch’s rising skyline has struck Miss Moore as the most noticeable change in the city since she last visited her grandparents, Dr and Mrs Fletcher Telford.
She was then studying at commercial college and returned home to take up a shorthand and typing position. During her return visit she has been working for the Dairy Board. “I don’t notice much difference in the pace of life here. Perhaps 1 worked a little more overtime at home, but
not much, Of course, there are fewer cars on the road," said Miss Moore. Walking the Milford track was her most memorable experience in New Zealand and one she would readily repeat —“even though we just about got flooded out the last day." This has given her an enthusiasm for hiking and she is thinking, of. joining a tramping club on her return home.
The barbecue is one aspect of American life Miss Moore has missed. For a special reminder of New Zealand she would like to add kumeras to outdoor meals at borne. “They are terrific,” she said.
