More Women Using Cheque Books
Many women housewives, career women, and office girls —are using cheque books and girls are the mainstay of banks in handling the rapidly increasing volume of cheques issued every year.
Flourishing a cheque book used to be a male prerogative but many women are finding that paying by cheque is economical. time-saving, and helps to keep them within a budget. Today women are seen more frequently on both sides of
the banking counter. Bankers say that women tellers have been very successful. They agree that they bring a personal touch to banking and, with experience, are as accurate and quick as male officers. On its way through the banking system a cheque passes through many female hands. It is paid on a deposit often lodged with a woman teller. Junior girls then process it for clearing back to the branch from which it is drawn.
Women ledger machine operators then debit it to the customer’s account and finally it is stored away in the bank’s records. Bank staff today numbers more than 10,000, more than 4000 of them women. • - \
