‘lmportant’ To Grieve

IN.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PERTH, Oct. 11.

It was often a mistake for people to be sent away for a holiday after they had lost a loved one, Dr lan Martin, of the Royal Melbourne Hospital, said at the fourth annual congress of the Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. It was important, he said, for bereaved persons to remain in familiar surroundings and to go through the psychological process of grief and mourning. People were often .put under heavy sedation after a death in the family, he said. This might be helpful as a temporary measure in particularly tragic circumstances, but it should not be the normal practice as suppressed emotions commonly gave rise to psychological, and physical illnesses, Dr Martin said. Grief and mourning should not be regarded as necessarily painful, and therefore to be suppressed.
