Fifty Illegitimate Births In Week

AUCKLAND, October 11. Fifty illegitimate births registered in
Auckland last week are reported to be a record.
The figures released by the Child Welfare - Division weekly have shown an average of 30 to 40.
The District Child Welfare Officer (Mr K. J. Flint) said the figures for the first six months of this year indicated that more than 12 per cent of all live births in New Zealand would be illegitimate. The national percentage
last year was 11.56, but in the first quarter this year it rose to 11.73 and in the second quarter to 13.03. Most ofthe girls were in the 17 to 20 age group.
He said that about 80 per cent of the children available for adoption last year were illegitimate, but the problem of getting adoptions was growing more acute. There were about 60 babies available In Auckland for placement now but no suitable homes. A number had congenital or other handicaps and many were non-Europeari.
