Rail Trend Big Loads

(J».Z. Brest Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 10. The closing of some uneconomical branch railway lines would lead to more business for road carriers, the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) told the carriers conference today. He said the review of the branch lines, built to serve the needs of a past era, would continue. Railways development would be toward long haul and inter-island services carrying large loads in units and containers.

Already the railways would carry standard 20ft x Bft x Bft containers on the main line from Helensville to Oamaru. Tunnels were being enlarged to extend the ability of the railways to move containers.
