N.A.T.O. Considers Missile Defence

(N.Z. P. A. -Reuter—Copyright/

PARIS, September 20.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation Secretary-General (Mr Manlio Brosio) said today that N.A.T.O. was considering an antiballistic missile system in Europe—but he declined to elaborate.

“An A.B.M. system Is under consideration in the alliance,” he said in answer to a question during an address to the Anglo-American Press Association in Paris. "We are examining it but it is too recent for comment.” The United States Defence Secretary, Mr Robert S. McNamara announced in San Francisco Washington’s decision to build a limited antimissile system in the United States as a S5OOO million de-

fence shield against China. Mr Brosio, who was making a farewell address before N.A.T.O. moves from Paris to Brussels next month, said he was confident that N.A.T.O. would remain a 15-nation alliance after the 1969 deadline when member states might withdraw with a year’s notice.
