OAMARU, September 20.
The Oamaru circuit magistrate (Mr T. A. Ross, S.M.) supports 10 o’clock closing, claiming that a law not supported by the majority is impossible to administer.
Mr Ross said his views on the extension of the present hours were based on the unhealthy approach to drinking in New Zealand and the difficulty of upholding a law
which did not have the support of the majority. "Six p.m. closing does not have the support of the majority at the moment," he said. Mr Ross prefers 10 p.m. closing because it falls into line with the wishes of the majority. “Anti-liquor factions are unreasoning in their approach to the problem, with more than a touch of bigotry in their outlook,” he said. The result he fears most in Saturday’s referendum is 6 p.m. closing carried by a small majority. If that happened 6 p.m. closing would be impossible, said Mr Ross.
