Recreation Centre For University

A physical recreation centre, costing about $720,000 tn the first stage, is proposed by the University of Canterbury Students’ Association. A special meeting of the association held last evening passed a motion that the building of the centre on the Ham campus of the university was to be given first priority. Additions to the recently completed Students’ Union building on the Ham campus wire also placed on the building programme. A proposal to seek the erection of student flats and other forms of accommodation was rejected. Mr T. B. Armitage, president of the association, said by 1973 most of the university would be consolidated on the Ham campus. “The year 1973 will be crucial for'the association: by that time there will be great demand placed on student

facilities at Ham. At present most of the recreational facilities are located on the town campus which are hopelessly inadequate,” said Mr A. 3. Lewis, the physical education officer at the university. Mr Lewis said provisional plans had been drawn up for a gymnasium. “We could not hope to cater fully for the needs of every sporting organisation within the university, but Stage 1 of our plans would at least provide much better facilities for the majority of groups. Stage II of the plans would include a swimming pool at Ham. “It would be possible by raising the student building fund levy, and with a $ for $ Government subsidy, to be abb to have the building completed and financed by 1972. Action must be taken now if the association is going to meet the needs of students when they are most pressing,” Mr Lewis said. Th* proposed recreation centre is to Include facilities for indoor sports such as Indoor basketball, badminton, judo, fencing, and gymnastics; there will be six squash courts.
