Garden Fires Opposed

The Christchurch Clean Air Society will urge home gardeners to turn their refuse into compost rather than bonfires. The society will distribute a leaflet throughout Christchurch which tells gardeners how to dispose of their rub- ’ bish profitably. The leaflet says that every . bonfire lighter not only contributes to air pollution which induces cancer, but is also • burning his own money by wasting good humus and plant ' foods. Using correct methods, kiti chen wastes can also be dis- , posed of in a compost heap, ' the leaflet says. The publicity officer of the ; society (Mr P. Neary) said ’ that the only long term solution to the garden , rubbish problem was its collection by local authorities. In spite of many complaints about garden bonfires the City , Council had done nothing i about the problem. “Although garden smoke is i localised it often spoils gardening as a recreation and the i garden as a place of relsxi Ing,” he said. “To many people bonfire smoke is most annoying, especially those ' with asthma and bronchitis.

“In our small way we hope to start a community movement which will eliminate garden fire smoke in Christchurch,” he said.
