MAGISTRATE’S COURT Licensing Charge Adjourned For Further Investigation

A man who said he had booked into Bonner’s Hotel on the evening of July 7 and slept there overnight, described a charge of being found on licensed premises after hours as “humiliating and against civil rights,” when he appeared, before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Ralph Underwood Kellow, aged 39, a freezing worker, pleaded not guilty. Sergeant R. G. Henwood said he went into the lounge

bar of the hotel about 10.15 p.ra. and saw the defendant, who said he was booked in. Kellow gave his room number as 30, but when asked to go to his room appeared to have difficulty in finding it Kellow’s name was in the hotel’s register, but he had no baggage or toilet gear in the room, said Sergeant Henwood. Kellow in evidence maintained he produced a receipt at the hotel. Sergeant Henwood disputed this. Kellow said his housekeeper had gone to hospital, and because he had washed his blankets and they were not dry, he decided to stay at the hateL

The police prosecutor. Detective Sergeant T. J. C. Joy asked Kellow what he had had for breakfast “I had bacon and eggs, and the eggs were aide by side," said Kellow.

Bronislawa Micbeline Mereia Mols, aged 21, ah entertainer (Mr M. J. Glut), pleaded guilty to a charge that on August 28 she wilfully obstructed Detective W. J. Tozer in the execution of his duty. She was convicted and fined $4O. Detective Sergeant Joy said Detective Tozer bad gone to Mole's flat after receiving information that a man, Ilich, who was wanted,on several warrants, wu there. Mols had at first-said there was only another girl in the fiat and had refused to allow him to enter. He had gone to call for assistance and then gone to the back door of the flat, when he saw Ilich leave by the front door. Mols had said she had been living with Ilich and was protecting him. The Magistrate said that any interference or obstruction of the police in their duty was serious particularly in those circumstances. Clive Lawrence Ilich, aged 24, unemployed, appeared on charges of breaking and entering the warehouse of Rogers Manufacturing Company, Ltd., 33 Queen street, Auckland, on December 19. and of receiving, about January 1, 1987, 10 water sets valued at $53.50 belonging to Rogers Manufacturing, Ltd. Sullivan, for the man, said he bad been with, friends and when he came upon the demonstration he had seen another -friend among the demonstrators who wore carrying placards to the effect of “no troops for Vietnam." BREACH OF PROBATION Royston Dean Samuel Sutton, aged 43, a labourer, pleaded guilty to a charge that on May 12 he committed a breach of hie probation in that he had failed to notify the probation service of his change of address. He was convicted and imprisoned for 14 days.
