First Ascent In Fiji

A former Christchurch man, Mr H. Simmons, and his 13-year-old son Gary, were members of a party of five to make the first ascent of a Fijian peak recently. The party climbed Mount Medrausucu (2400 ft one of twin-peaks in the Medrausucu range 30 miles northwest of Suva. At the nearby village of Nadakuni the villagers said the peak had never been climbed and doubted that the party could do it Although the peak is not high, it is in very rough country. The party named the track leading to the summit “Gary’s track.” Mr Simmons, formerly an employee of the Valuation Department in Christchurch, has been with the Fiji Valuation Department Suva for the last year. He is a member of the Suva Rucksack Club.
