The Department of Physics has active research interests in theoretaical and experimental solid state physics, for which a range of facilities is available. Current research projects are concerned with low temperature physics 3HE and 4HE), superconductivity, magnetism, optical properties of solids, laser physics, solid state plasmas, electron microscopy, E.S.R. and N.M.R. spectroscopy, nuclear orientation, Mossbauer effect. Currently research is in progress in group theory, representation theory, analysis and theory of numbers. For two of the vacancies preference will be given to an applicant with research experience in topology or the use of computers in pure mathematics. For the position in French, applications from candidates interested in the history of ideas in France from the eighteenth century onwards will be especially welcomed. The University of Waikato began last year teaching full-time co-ordinated courses of study in the Schools of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education. It occupies a site of about 125 acres on the outskirts of Hamilton. The academic organisation is based on schools of study rather than on faculties and departments. The development of postgraduate work and research is encouraged and conditions for study leave are favourable.
