Kumai Stays On Ground But Makes Impression
"The Preet" Special Service WELLINGTON. The decision not to school Kumai took a lot of life from final trials at Trentham yesterday, but he could not have been expected to improve on his work-out on the flat. None of the Jumpers made a better Impression than Kumai. Among the flat horses. Head Off,
Golden Summit. Friendly Opal, and Kintyre stood out. Work was on tbe trial grass, which was soft. The course proper seems likely to offer similar footing if the fine weather holds. Kumal (G. Jenkins) worked with Ringlock (Landers), Koral (Hillis), and Arlelgh (Lewis). They went a mile in Imin SOsec, the last half In 55 4-ssec and the last three furlongs in Usee. Kumai won by two lengths from Koral. Ringlock was only half a length behind Koral but Arleigh was beaten off. Eiffel Tower accompanied the i rest of the Haslett team to the . track but did not gallop. Two Wellington Steeplechase
runners, Amber , Wine and Something Special, were schooled.
Amber Wine (Jenkins) set out with Gay Erin (Hercock), but went away from him in the first 100 yards and remained clear. He jumped two boards and two brushes and although he ran one down it was a fair effort tor a solo school.
Something Special (Walters) worked over a round of the country.
Harapepe (Walters) and Mosque (Hillis) also jumped a round of the country. After the first two, the second of which he ran down, Harapepe was taken to the extreme outer for the boards at the five. The two jumped that and the next brush together, then Harapepe jumped ahead over the boards at the three. He held his lead down the atralght, then Mosque jolnd him over the brush near the mile. One of the flat gallops provided an upset when Backfire (Carrick), a favoured Stewards’ runner, was trounced by Golden Guy (Landers) over five furlongs. Golden Guy took 53 2-Ssec for the last half-mile and 39 l-ssec for the last three furlongs.
Golden Summit (Landers) beat Queen’s Poet (Andrews) by a length and a half over half a mile in Slfsec, the last three furlongs in 37}sec. Kintyre (Carrick) surprised by pulling up in perfect order after half a mile in Slsec. Kintyre has missed work lately with a bruised foot, but T. G. Stokes is confident that he Is at his best for the Whyte. Friendly Opal (Landers) did not gallop hard to sprint three furlongs in 38 3-ssec. FAST TRIAL Head Off (Andrews) and Cambridge Fair (Taylor) took 50 for half a mile. This was the fastest of the morning. Damar ran half a mile In Msec. the last three furlongs in 39 2-ssec. Tosh beat First Night Out comfortably over half a mile in 55 3-ssec.
Red Crest (Taylor) beat Outspan (Andrews) by a length Over a mile tn Imin 50sec. Tiklpunga (Landers) went with them early but dropped behind in the straight. The first two ran 52}sec for the last four.
