Timber Output Reduced
Sawmill production in Canterbury would probably be down 10 per cent in the year ending March 31 next, said the president of the Canterbury Sawmillers’ Association (Mr R. C. Halliday). There were 32 mills in the association, he said. Mr Halliday said he was not aware of any dismissals, but he understood that since about February sawmills in Canterbury had not been replacing staff who left Working time had been cut by as much as 7j per cent in recent months and at most mills no overtime was.worked. “My feeling is that some sawmillers are not feeling any problem at the moment, but there are others who are,” said Mr Halliday.
