Fund Supporting 1000 Sponsorships Overseas
The North Canterbury branch of the Save the Children Fund has 1000 sponsorships, including 80 families, Mrs A. Maccoll, the officer directing sponsorships, says in the annual report of the branch, to be presented at the annual meeting tomorrow.
Sponsorships available through the fund’s headquarters in London and the international Union for Child Welfare in Geneva are held in Austria, Britain, Crete, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Korea, Lesotho, Malta, Morocco, Pakistan, the Seychelles Islands, Seirra Leone and Turkey. Mrs Maccoll says sponsorships are available in several other countries. No. sponsorships are available in Vietnarti as settled conditions and permanent addresses are needed for supervision of a family. Vietnam is still a case for emergency hospital treatment, nursing and relief work, she says. “Sponsorship is very often the beginning of a lasting interest in the work of the Save the Children Fund, and this particular form of help attracts many people in the first place because of its very personal nature,” says Mrs
Maccoll. “Children who are homeless or in foster homes, physically handicapped, ill, or living in distressing home conditions, are much helped and morally encouraged by sponsorship, by knowing that some person or group of persons is interested in them and in their welfare.” Mrs M. B. Warren said the number of members and friends had risen to 235 and from the increased income it had been possible to sponsor a bed in the children’s wing of the Government Hospital in Masan, Korea. The cost of this was £l3O a year and the balance of £99 3s went to the fund's general funds overseas.
"We are very grateful to all members and friends for their continued support,” said Mrs Warren.
The president of the fund (Miss M. G. Havelaar) said that for the last year the financial burden of the fund’s headquarters had been greater than ever.
“When one knows that 100,000 children from all over the world look daily to the fund for food, housing, medical and nursing care, educational and vocational training, one realises that financial help must be found to ensure the future of today’s children,” she said.
