’37 Police Recruits To Mark Service
(N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 3. More than 50 policemen, ranging in rank from constable to assistant commissioner, will meet in Wellington next week-end to mark the 30th anniversary of their joining the service. They are members of the 125-strong 1937 recruit wing, specially recruited to bolster police strength and make a six-day, 48-hour week possible in the service. Before that, policemen were required to work seven days a week. Among the “class of ’37” recruits attending will be Assis-
tant Commissioner W. H. A. Sharp, of Wellington. A number of former policemen who were members of the wing will also attend. They Include Mr H. Lapwood, National M.P. for Rotorua. The wing's tutor, Mr G. Paine, of Wellington, then a sergeant, will be a guest of honour. He is now in his eighties. He retired a number of years ago as a superintendent.
