(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, July 3.
Robert John McLean, a 24-year-old Australian who escaped over the Auckland prison wall early yesterday morning using sheets that were tied together, pleaded guilty before Mr J. R. Drummond, S.M., today, to a charge of escaping from lawful custody on July 2. He was convicted and remanded until July 10 for a probation report and sentence.
Sergeant R. Reay said that at 8 a.m. on Sunday, officers discovered that McLean was missing from the prison.
McLean was located at 1.50 p.m. in a disused storeroom in a hotel. He told the police that he hid in the prison at 6 p.m. on Saturday and went over the wall at 3.15 a.m. using the knotted sheets. He climbed through wire using a mattress as protection. He had gone directly to a hotel and was shown to the room where police found him. McLean told the police he had escaped “for personal reasons.”
