Rough Races For Burns

(N.Z. Press Association)

DUNEDIN.

There was another taste of the rough and tumble of European athletics for D. B. Burns, of Otago, when he took part in a two-day meeting in Saarijarvi, Finland, three days before the World Games. The New Zealand mile champion ran in the 800 metres and 1500 metres at the meeting and described both races as “really rough”. He was sixth in the 800 metres and fourth over 1500 metres. At the same meeeting B. G. Rose, of Taranaki, was second in the 5000 metres. He and the winner, L. Phillipp, of West Germany, were both credited with the same time--14 : 14.8.

World Record.—The French swimmer. A. Mosconi, aged 17. equalled the men's world 400 metres freestyle record of 4min 10.6 sec. The record was set last month by M. Spitz, of the United States, and still awaits ratification.
