TAKING OF FINWHALE
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.)
LONDON, July 3.
Scientists and zoologists have failed to persuade the International Whaling Commission to ban the taking of fin whales from the Antarctic, according to the “Observer.”
“They argued that the fin whale is in danger of extinction. The commission, meeting in London last week, agreed to a small reduction in the total number of whales that may be caught, but it refused to discriminate between the fin whale and the sei whale.” The fin is a larger and more valuable variety thad the sei.
The newspaper added that there were signs now that the blue whale would survive, but in what numbers it was not yet known. The Greenland whale, almost eliminated by over-fish-ing during the nineteenth century, had been left alone for 50 years and was still extremely rare.
Pictures Removed. —The military commander of East Java has ordered all pictures of President Sukarno to be removed from walls, it was reported today.—Djakarta, July 3.
