TRAPPED 5 DAYS

21 Miners Alive

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MANILA, July 3. Long after hope had been abandoned rescuers today reported finding alive 21 of the 42 miners trapped for more than five days a mile below the surface in a collapsed gold-copper shaft. United Press International reported.

There was no word of the other 21 miners trapped when mud filled their mine tunnel during a typhoon last Wednesday.

Only hours before the rescuers reported finding the 21 alive, one rescue ocial said they found "the smeH of death thick in the air” in the mine, 250 miles north of Manila.

Some rescue officials said almost immediately after the collapse that there was little hope of finding any of the trapped men alive. Earlier today they found bits and pieces of miners’ clothing, and this supported the belief that none of the men had survived.
