Cats

Sir, —“Broken-hearted” is not alone in distress. There

are too many well-loved and cared for cats run over and left to die in the gutter. I have been told that it is an offence in America to fail to attend to a cat or dog hurt in a road accident and to endeavour to notify the owner. Carelessness in these matters is punishable, apparently, by heavy fines. The value of cats in rodent control is fully appreciated. Another reason may be that regard for animal life may stimulate regard for human life. Neuter cats seldom stray and these, too, vanish inexplicably far too often in Christchurch. Is it unreasonable to ask if the reasons have been investigated?—Yours, etc., FELLOW TRAVELLERS. July 2, 1967.
