“Mona Vale”

Sir, —Your leading article makes sad reading: the purchase of this fine property seems further away than ever. It is a great pity that the suggestion that I made in the first place was not given a trial—to 'see if the 20-odd clubs in and around Christchurch would take over the maintenance of the grounds for three months and form a “save Mona Vale club” at a subscription of £l. Have a restaurant and tea rooms open to the public at a charge of 2s 6d a car. £20,000 is needed to complete the purchase, surely 20,000 citizens of Canterbury would be civicminded enough after viewing these magnificent grounds to join the club or make a donation.—Yours, etc. S. W. HICKMOTT. July 1, 1967.
