Two Sent Off Early
(From J. O. COFFEY. N.Z.P.A Special Correspondent)
R. I. Orchard (New Zealand) and N. R. Kelly (Australia) were severely cautioned by the judiciary committee of the Queensland Rugby League after being sent off in the second test.
The referee (Mr C. Pearce) sent them from the field only 90 seconds after the match began.
Orchard ran into the Australian stand-off half, J. W. Gleeson, after Gleeson had kicked through. He was promptly knocked to the ground by a punch from Kelly.
Mr Pearce ran in as several players joined in a scuffle and sent Kelly off. He then turned to Orchard, who was still sitting on the ground, and told him to go, too. When Orchard was knocked down other players exchanged blows. Several New Zealand players said that Mr Pearce could have mistaken Orchard for O. Danielson who joined in the melee and hit Kelly. Orchard is a Maori and Danielson a Samoan.
Kelly was last sent off in an international match when he played for Australia at Avignon during the 1963-64 tour of France. Then he refused to leave the field and was eventually allowed to remain by the referee (Mr Cassan).
Kelly received $BO appearance money for his 90 seconds of football.
