ATHLETES GETTING MEALS PROVIDED
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) HONOLULU. The Australian and New Zealand athletic team’s financial crisis ended on Saturday with an assurance that all its expenses during the seven-day stop-over in Honolulu would be met.
The team manager, Mr K. Faulkner, said on Friday he would take the team home instead of to Los Angeles for the United States v. Commonwealth match next week-end unless both accommodation and meals were provided.
Hawaiian authorities had told Mr Faulkner on arrival last Wednesday they could afford accommodation but not
meals, which the 30 Australians and New Zealanders would have to buy for themselves.
On Saturday, the Loe Angeles meeting organisers telephoned Mr Faulkner guaranteeing to cover all costs. The phone call ended two days of worry for the athletes who had stocked refrigerators with frozen foods which they cooked themselves in their hotel apartments to
avoid high-priced Waikiki restaurant bills. Mr Faulkner toid the team later he would reimburse them for all restaurant meals and food they had already bought. “We are greatly relieved the misunderstanding has been clarified and arrangements are now entirely satisfactory to us,” he said.
Anzac athletes broke 11 Hawaiian state open records in their first warm-up meeting on Saturday. They outclassed their inexperienced Hawaiian opponents, who provided the only opposition at the “international relays” meeting, by winning all events except one in which they competed.
