Close Call For Amon

The New Zealand racing driver, C. Amon, narrowly escaped injury on Saturday during the final practice lap for the French Grand Prix.

Amon, driving the only Ferrari entered in the race, swerved in the second hairpin bend of the 2.74-mile course. He escaped being hit by the following car by backing his vehicle off the track. Amon clocked the seventh fastest time of 1:38.0. The other New Zealanders, B. R. McLaren (Eagle) and D. Hulme (Repco-Brabham), had the fifth and sixth best trial times respectively. G. Hill (Britain) driving a Lotus-Ford had a record lap Of 1:36.2 for an average of 102.82 m.p.h. J. Surtees’s Honda was put out of the running because officials said that the engine was in no condition to compete.
