Two Women Fatally Hurt

Two young women died after a car struck a power-pole about four miles north of Pahiatua on Saturday night, the Press Association reported. They were

MISS MARGARET TERESA BEECH, aged 24, a teacher, of Masterton road, Pahiatua, who died instantly, and MISS JILLIAN STEPHENSON, aged 20, a nurse, of Victoria avenue, Dannevirke, who died a few hours later in the Palmerston North Hospital.

Both were passengers in a car driven by Philip Herbert Lancaster, aged 21, of Wellington, who is still in Palmerston North Hospital. A third passenger, Gavin Richard McConnell, aged 25, of Woodville, was admitted to the Pahiatua Hospital and discharged today. Severe Burns A 20-year-old Timaru woman who suffered severe burns when her cotton nightdress caught alight while she was stoking her open kitchen fire on Saturday morning, was reported by Burwood Hospital last night to be “on the seriously-ill list and likely to be in this condition for some time.”

She is Mrs Lilian Staite, of 50 Hassall street, the mother of an infant daughter. The accident occurrred about 9 a.m. She was badly burned on both thighs, the body and both hands. Her hair was also singed. She suffered 50 degree burns.

Mrs Staite was taken to the Timaru Hospital and treated before being transferred to Burwood Hospital.
