SQUASH TITLE

Waugh Top Seeding

C. R. Waugh (Aucklapd), six times New Zealand champion and regarded by many as the gieatest squash rackets player produced in the Dominion, heads the seedings for the Canterbury squash championships which begin at the Chester street courts this evening. Second seed is the current national title-holder, T. R. Johnston (Palmerston North). Johnston, gave Waugh stern opposition in the North Island championships this year and if they meet in the Canterbury final, it could produce some of the best squash seep in Christchurch, since the world amateur champion, A. Jawaid, was here in 1964. The main obstacle to Waugh’s progress to the final, will be J. N. Isaacs (Wellington). Johnston should meet B. J. Rippin (Timarq) in his semifinal and although Rippin has given some consistent displays this year, it is unlikely that he will fully extend the champion.

The prospects of a Christchurch player being a serious contender, against the first three seeded players Is remote. R. M. Garrett (Christchurch) will probably meet Waugh in the quarter-final but cannot expect much success.
