Contamination Of Water
Further contamination of faecal origin had been formed in the county water supply, taken from the Lyttelton Borough Council’s system it was reported to the Heathcote County Council last night The Health Department said that the contamination had been found in a sample taken at the Heathcote railway station on April 10. Samples taken later at Heathcote, and from the settling tanks, had been found to be satisfactory, as also had the supply to Heathcote
Open tanks at Heathcote appeared to be a likely source of contamination, the department stated and it was
noted that Lyttelton proposed to roof them over. The council decided to write to the Lyttelton Borough Council, expressing its concern.
Power Line.—On a request from the Education Board for the re-routing of a power line at Station road, Heathcote, because it interfered with oak trees on the school grounds, it was decided to ask the board to help with costs. Programme.—The electrical inspector (Mr A. Emmett) was asked to prepare a six weeks’ programme of work, including rippie control installation and to prepare a broad works programme up to March 31.
Approved.—Approval in principle was given to the provision of a learners’ swimming pool at the Ferrymead historic park. No Parking.— A prohibition was placed on parking on the east side of Cracroft terrace at its intersection with Dyers Pass road. Office Name.—A new post office at the Colombo streetWoodbridge road corner should be named Thorrington, the council decided. ’ Exception was taken to the proposal to call the office Lower Cashmere, but the council was agreeable to it being named Cashmere. “Why not Upper Sydenham?” asked Cr C. M. A. Thompson.
