TOO MUCH TRAVEL
Carstairs Omitted
R. Carstairs, the t New Zealand feather-weigh't champion, was well below his best form and did not win a round against D. Enright (Southland) at Invercargill on Monday evening, said Mr I. W. McKinley, the trainer who accompanied the Christchurch boxers to the tournament. “Carstairs had travelled to Blackball and back by car on Saturday and Sunday, and then flew to Invercargill on the Monday. He had a tough fight before beating J. Purdon at Blackball.
“The travelling was probably too much for him and was almost certainly part, if not most, of the cause for his loss of form,” Mr McKinley said. Enright thus wins the feather-weight place in the South Island team to meet the touring Australians at Invercargill on July 17. Carstairs beat Enright in the national championships last year. The Ashburton association endeavoured to get Enright to box Carstairs again at its tournament to be held at Ashburton on July 8. But the Southland association declined, because a cut eye, or some minor mishap at Ashburton, could have put Enright out of the South Island team.
The Ashburton association is trying to match B. Cumming, the Westport miner, against B. Kendall at Ashburton. Kendall is now in full training.
H. Bullmore, the Canterbury light welter-weight, who has won his last five fights, and gave away 101 b when beating D. Delany (Westport) at Blackball, is also in the South Island team.
