‘WALKABOUT’ PROPOSED
Operation 21 Campaign
A giant national “walkabout,” to be held in every town and city of New Zealand, has been suggested as the opening function for this year’s Operation 21 campaign, members of the Christchurch co-ordinating committee were told.
The campaign—which involves the youth section of the New Zealand Freedom from Hunger appeal will be held from July 30 to August 19.
Its aims are to educate young people about the facts of hunger in the world and to encourage them to do something about it through raising funds. Last year, more than £40,000 was raised and was devoted to development work aimed at destroying the causes of hunger. There were many young people who would do something to assist in raising funds for the hungry, but they had to be “set on fire,” and this could only be done by their fellows, Mr G. H. Coley, C.0.R.5.0. organiser for the Canterbury-Westland area, told the meeting. He had been tremendously encouraged last year by the quick response of the young people, and their great interest and enthusiasm.
The main task of the coordinating committee would be that of publicising the campaign and getting all youth groups interested and working on projects, Mr M. Thoms, the newly-elected chairman said.
The co-ordinating committee will consist of two representatives of each major youth organisation In the city.
Last year’s funds raised through the campaign in New Zealand were used to purchase a tractor for use in India, help in the reconstruction of villages in the Philippines, develop family-sized dairy farms and provide welldrilling equipment in India
