The Federal Government today urged shipping interests to reconsider their decision to impose a 5 per cent surcharge on exports from Australia to Britain and Europe. The Government intervention took the form of telegrams] from the Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Trade (Mr McEwen) to the Overseas Shipping Representatives* Association and the Federal Exporters’ Overseas Transport Committee in Sydney. A 5 per cent surcharge on imports to Australia from Britain and Europe came into effect at midnight last night A London announcement said it was necessary to offset increased costs caused by the closure of the Suez Canal. An identical surcharge on exports from Australia to Britain' and Europe was announced in Sydney yesterday, to come into effect from midnight on Thursday. This is the charge questioned today by Mr McEwen. All three parties concerned declined to divulge the text of the telegram.
