CRAYFISH LURE

Applications For Chathams

The Marine Department In Wellington has received dozens of applications from New Zealand fishermen for permission to sail to the Chatham Islands. A spokesman for the department said that the fishermen were anxious for a share in the huge catches of crayfish which have been taken recently. Between October, 1966, and March, 1967, the 33 boats working around the Islands had caught 1446 tons of crayfish and nearly 120 tons of wet fish. A fleet of ships which was to have left Lyttelton for the islands tomorrow will not sail before next Monday. The delay in departure is because of alterations now being made to some of the vessels. The actual number of ships in the fleet has not yet been determined, as applications from other fishermen have been sent to the head office of the Marine Department in Wellington during the last few days.
