Power Off

Radio and television programmes were cut off for 20 minutes during a widespread power failure in Christchurch on Saturday. Districts served by the Addington sub-station, including the inner and southern suburbs, were affected. The district engineer of the New Zealand Electricity Department (Mr R. S. S. Meredith) said the failure was caused by an operating error. Tea On Tap Tea will be served at the new Birkenhead Trust Hotel in Auckland. Mr R. N. Currie, newly-appointed chairman of the Birkenhead Licensed Hotel Trust, said members of the trust were agreed that the hotel must cater for all. If a woman accompanying her husband wanted a cup of tea, the service would be provided for. Sunny Day Light north-easterly winds, blew in Christchurch on Saturday and Sunday. Yesterday, after morning fog had cleared by 11 a.m. the weather became clear and sunny and a maximum temperature for the week-end of 53 degrees was recorded at Harewood at 3 p.m. Frosts of 5 degrees were recorded at Harewood and at the Botanic Gardens. At Harewood at 6 a.m. the temperature was 35 degrees, by 9 a.m. it was 36 degrees and at noon it was 48 degrees. On Saturday a partly cloudy sky kept the temperature below 50 degrees and a maximum of 47 degrees was recorded at Harewood at 3 p.m. Poor Samples Test samples -of New Zealand hops, sent to a Sapporo brewery on Hokkaido, one of the northern islands of Japan, had a high content of seeds and stalks, reports “Export Jews.” Hops from Czechoslovakia and West Germany, the usual source for the brewery, were completely free from any extraneous matter which could affect the brew. The brewery belongs to one of the largest beer-brew-ing organisations in Japan. Lake Ida Skating More than 500 persons who visited Lake Ida yesterday had excellent skating conditions after a 4 degree frost. The ice was hard and fast all day except for a short period when the temperature rose to 44 degrees and made the surface wet. 'Within an hour the temperature had dropped again to 34 degrees. Ice patrols were on duty all day. Meat Price Fall Although no export killing is now being done in Canterbury, meat exporters issued a further schedule of prices for export stock at the week-end. It shows a further drop of Id per lb for all classes of lamb and Id per lb drop for all wethers. A spokesman for the industry said last evening that killing was still going on in the North Island and some killing was also being done in Southland. To 171 Countries New Zealanders can now telephone Albania, the Sudan, Macao, Madeira, Muscat-Oman, Paraguay, and Peru. These countries are some of those recently included in New Zealand’s world telephone service. Calls can now be made to 171 countries and the Post Office is continuing negotiations with the countries still not provided for.
