Popular Theology
[By the Right Reverend W. A. PYATT, Bishop of Christchurch]
There has been a remarkable increase over the last few years in the printing of religious books. A supply of such literature has always been constant because theology is always being disturbed and therefore rewritten and discussed. In the past this has appeared in conventional, solid books. Recent developments show theology as popular literature, written in a popular manner and much of it being produced in a popular form. “Honest to God” is one example of such a book, and the success of a large number of religious bookshops is an indication of the demand. The display of religious literature now being organised in Christchurch and the rising demand for books of this kind are sure
to come as a surprise to those who do not realise the area covered. In this matter, the Churches are running on parallel lines. It is a serious attempt to assist both the professional and lay people of the community to see what is now available in that field and to evaluate the possibilities for the future.
