PARACHUTE LANDINGS
Protests From Farmers (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, June 1. Irate farmers living near Andover, in Hampshire, have asked the National Farmers’ Union to consider legal action against parachutists who land among growing crops. Their approach results from incidents last week-end when eight parachutists landed on one farm in the area where corn was growing. A farmer’s wife, Mrs A. Machin, of Thruxton, Hampshire, said that parachutists landing in fields sent dairy cattle “absolutely berserk." The secretary of the Hampshire National Fanners’ Union (Mr W. J. Keenlyside) said yesterday that four farmers had asked the union for advice on whether to take court action, or to arrange talks with the organisations controlling parachuting. Test For Squadron.—The readiness and deployment capability of the R.N.Z.A.F.'s No. 14 (Canberra) Squadron would be tested early next month when six Canberras and 90 men will move from Ohakea to Butterworth, a Royal Australian Air Force base in north Malaysia, the Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson) said yesterday.— (P.A)
