INDIAN FAMINE

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW DELHI, May 31. Drought and famine have hit four of India’s northern states which have a total poulatlon of 50 million. The states are Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Unofficial reports of deaths from lack of food have come in from Bihar but the central government said yesterday fatality reports from the famine areas are so far unconfirmed by the state governments. The drought, and consequent famine, has been caused by the failure of last year's monsoon rains. In West Bengal 2,500,000 are said to be at starvation level in the Purulla and Bankura regions. In Madhya Pradesh two regions are begging for food—Surguja, formerly a food grain surplus area, and Raigarh. In Uttar Pradesh, the Mlrzapur region is also seriously affected.
