Satellite Fails
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
NEW YORK, May 30. Esro 11, a 10-nation European scientific satellite, failed to go into orbit last night after a malfunction of the third stage of the United States Scout rocket which blasted it aloft from the Vandenberg Air Force base, California. It was the first failure of the Scout rocket in 22 shots. A space programme official said tracking stations at Tananarive, Madagascar, and Fairbanks, Alaska, failed to pick up signals on schedule, thus confirming that the satellite had not gone into orbit. Up until then the $6 million programme had gone without a hitch, the official said.
