Return To Form After 5 Years
Lovely Clover recorded her first win as a jumper and the second of her career in the Studholme Steeplechase at Waimate on Saturday. Her success at Waimate came five years and a half after her first win, but her career has not followed orthodox lines with racing from one season to the next. She won her first race at Oamaru in January, 1962, but did little more racing that year, and did not race at all at four and five years. Last winter she performed only moderately for her Darfield owner-trainer, Mr G. A. Hutton, but her win on Saturday held promise of further successes on the South Island winter circuit.
Ridden with judgment by P. J. Daly, Lovely Clover closed on First Watch going to the last fence of Saturday’s race, and ran the race out more strongly than the Washdyke gelding for victory by three lengths. The win favourite, Jolly Fox, jumped better than most of the others in the race, but the distance troubled him and
he was a weakening third in a gap of five lengths behind First Watch. None of the others showed anything to enthuse ovet Dark Jester was hopeless on the soft track, and finished last. His stablemate. Startler, landed badly at the fourth fence and dropped his rider, G. C. Mee. DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB WINTER MEETING JUNE 3 and 5, 1967 ACCEPTANCES for First Day will CLOSE TODAY.
