Key Matches In Chatham Cup

The magic of cup ties surrounds Canterbury soccer tomorrow, when seven first division clubs and the sole second division survivor, Celtic, play their quarter-final matches. For unfancied .Celtic it could be a day to go down in the club’s record books, or one to forget quickly, when it takes on last year’s national finalist, Western, at Western Park.

Celtic is currently one from bottom in the second division, Western third from top in the first division, and it would provide the biggest upset for many years if Celtic managed to win.

Western, however, is taking

no chances, and is fielding a strong side. D. Smith takes over in goal from an injured D. Spraggs, P. Frost has been moved to right-half, and the forward line will be selected from six players, including the club’s coach, A. Marshall. Marshall has been having treatment from the All Black masseur, Mr P. Long, and has more than a 50-50 chance of being fit But the ties with the greatest impact are both at English Park, where Christchurch City will play Technical in the early game, and New Brighton follows against High School Old Boys. City has made two changes in the forward line, resting both J. Logue and F. Madrussan, and replacing them with C. Martin and M. Clements. Technical expects C. Jones to

be fit to play at winghalf and A. Vernon will probably re place A. Dawe, who is being married today. After its surprise defeat by Shirley-Nomads last week, Technical will not be fancied to win, but the cup tie atmosphere is a great leveller, and City will not have things easy.

Old Boys have made one vital change for its match against Brighton, D. Hadlee, son of the former New Zealand cricket captain, W. A. Hadlee, playing his first game in goal for the senior side. Brighton has an unchanged side, its sharp-shooting insideforward, A. Caine, having recovered from the injury he suffered in last Sunday’s representative trial match.

The last time these two teams met, in the Hurley.

Shield, Old Boys held the championship runner-up to a 2-2 draw. They have 'a stronger side tomorrow than on that occasion, and Brighton will need to be in top form to beat Old Boys. The other cup ties Is at Rangers Park where ShirleyNomads will meet Rangers. Shirley has won its last two matches and for the third successive week has an. unchanged team. Rangers, hard hit by injuries recently, have some of their key men fit again, with A. Nottingham returning In goal, G. Adam to inside-right, and D. Lalley at outside-left There has been a change of kick-off time in the third division section B match between H. 5.0.8. and Riccarton at Malvern Park, the game now starting at 1 p.m.
