Picked For N.Z. Soccer, Reserve For Auckland
(New Zealand Frew Association) AUCKLAND. The Ponsonby player, G. Yorke, who is in the New Zealand soccer squad to play Manchester United at English Park on Wednesday, is only a reserve in the Auckland team.
The selector-coach, Mr J. Schwanner, yesterday named the Auckland side to play Manchester in the English League champion’s first match, at Carlaw Park on Sunday. Yorke was brought into the New Zealand squad as a replacement for another Aucklander, C. Shaw, who was injured in a club match last Saturday. Yorke, aged 26, is a centreforward or inside-forward. The Auckland team is: A. Stroud; W. Hunter, T. McNab, P. Rennell, G. Lake; I. Kristensen, J. Houghton, G. Lamont; J. Legg, M. Burgess, R. Mears.
Reserves: N. Siebert, C. Latimour, D. Salt, G. Yorke. Stroud, Hunter, McNab, Lake, Lamont, Legg and Burgess are all in the New Zealand senior squad. Siebert and Salt are members of the national under-23 squad to play Scotland at Hutt on June 5.
Rennell is the former Canterbury player who was considered unlucky not to have been included in the national squad for his experience and stamina.
Mr Schwanner announced the Auckland team in a 4-3-3 formation, the same system successfully used by England in the World Cup last year.
Playing against Auckland will be two players—R. Charlton and N. Stiles—who were vital cogs in the England line-up last July.
